At Least 11 Hikers Killed After Indonesia Volcano Erupts

Rescuers have found the bodies of at least 11 hikers who were caught in the eruption of Mount Marapi volcano in western Indonesia, local authorities said Monday.

The eruption, which occurred on Sunday, sent a plume of ash 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) into the sky. Rescuers have been working since then to locate and evacuate hikers who were on the mountain at the time of the eruption.

Of the 75 hikers who were on the mountain, 49 have been safely evacuated, while 12 are still missing. Three hikers were found alive, but 11 others were found dead.

Some of the rescued hikers have been hospitalized with burns, as the eruption caused intense heat in the area around the crater.

Mount Marapi is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, and it is located on the island of Sumatra. The volcano is on the second alert level of Indonesia's four-step system, and authorities have imposed a three-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater.

Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of intense volcanic and seismic activity caused by the meeting of continental plates. The country has nearly 130 active volcanoes.
