Battling Addiction, Friends Star Matthew Perry Dies of Ketamine Overdose

Beloved actor Matthew Perry, known for his role as Chandler Bing in the iconic sitcom "Friends," has passed away at the age of 54. Medical examiners confirmed his cause of death to be an accidental ketamine overdose, drawing a curtain on a life marked by both comedic brilliance and personal struggles.

Perry, who entertained audiences globally for a decade with his witty one-liners and relatable portrayal of Chandler, grappled with addiction for years. Despite his on-screen success, he battled a hidden battle – a dependence on drugs, including ketamine.

In October, Perry was found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home pool. Today, the official report reveals the heartbreaking details. While Perry had reportedly been clean for 19 months, the medical examiner found a fatal dose of ketamine in his system, alongside contributory factors like drowning and pre-existing health conditions.

Ketamine, a drug with both anesthetic and hallucinogenic properties, can be used medically but is also illegally consumed for its euphoric effects. In Perry's case, it proved fatal.

His memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," published last year, offered a glimpse into his tumultuous journey. He candidly described his reliance on ketamine, calling it a "happy shovel" that masked pain but came with a brutal hangover.

Despite multiple stints in rehab and near-death experiences like a burst colon in 2018, Perry remained dedicated to recovery. He wrote in his book, "I should be dead," but also expressed hope for a brighter future.

The news of Perry’s passing sent shockwaves through Hollywood and the "Friends" fandom. Co-stars like Jennifer Aniston and Matt LeBlanc mourned the loss of their on-screen family member, sharing heartfelt tributes on social media.

Matthew Perry's legacy transcends the iconic "Friends" apartment. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and a poignant reminder of the unseen struggles that can afflict even the brightest stars. His story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of addiction and the importance of seeking help.
