Red Velvet Rings in 2024 with Manila Crowd, K-Pop Meets OPM in BGC Countdown Spectacular

Thrilling the massive audience at Bonifacio Global City's New Year's Eve countdown, Red Velvet members Irene, Seulgi, and Wendy made history as the first K-Pop act to headline the annual Philippine celebration. Joining forces with Filipino musical giants, they ushered in 2024 with a vibrant mix of K-Pop and OPM, electrifying the crowd on 5th Avenue in Taguig.

This wasn't just any countdown. In a first for the Philippines, Taguig LGU brought in the global sensation Red Velvet, showcasing both Irene and Seulgi's powerhouse unit and Wendy's solo brilliance. It was a homecoming of sorts for the trio, having performed with Yeri at the Mall of Asia Arena earlier in the year, but this time, they were the main event, lighting up the city's financial district.

Wendy's angelic vocals soared with her solo debut "Like Water," followed by the soulful "Why Can't You Love Me." Irene and Seulgi then joined her for a brief, electrifying moment, marking Wendy's first Filipino performances of both songs.

The crowd erupted as Irene and Seulgi unleashed their "Naughty" tutting skills, reliving the energy of their "Monster" EP era from 2020, a time when pandemic restrictions kept audiences away from music shows. "It's been a long time since we performed as a unit," Seulgi conveyed through a translator, the passion echoing in their dance and vocals.

Culminating their set with the legendary "Monster," the trio joined the throng in a joyous countdown to midnight. As fireworks painted the sky, OPM legend Ely Buendia serenaded the crowd with Eraserheads classics like "Ang Huling El Bimbo" and "Super Proxy," capping off a truly unforgettable night.

Beyond the dazzling spectacle, the countdown reflected Taguig City's commitment to "leveling up" each year. "We said we really have to embrace the spirit of our city," shared Chi Bocobo of the mayor's office. "We keep finding ways to bring more joy, and this year, we thought, 'Why not give them something unexpected?'" With K-Pop's immense popularity in the Philippines, Red Velvet became the perfect surprise.

In a backstage interview, Wendy voiced a wish for the coming year, one shared by countless fans: "All I want is for everyone to be healthy and happy." And on that magical night, surrounded by pulsating music and a jubilant crowd, it seemed as if that wish had already begun to shine.

As Red Velvet looks forward to their 10th anniversary in August, this Manila performance serves as a powerful reminder of their global impact and the deep connection they share with their Filipino fans. The 2024 Bonifacio Global City countdown will forever be etched in memory as a night where K-Pop and OPM collided, creating a vibrant mosaic of music and joy that ushered in a brand new year.
