Quezon City Quarantines 41 Contacts of First Mpox Case

Quezon City authorities have quarantined 41 individuals who had close contact with the Philippines' first confirmed mpox case. The 33-year-old Filipino patient visited a dermatology clinic and a massage spa in the city.

Mayor Maria Josefina Belmonte announced the quarantine measures during a press conference. The city's Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) head, Rolly Cruz, said they were able to trace and isolate the individuals to prevent further spread of the disease.

The massage spa was closed after it was found to be operating illegally.

The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the first mpox case in the Philippines shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a global health emergency. The Filipino patient had no recent travel history.

The patient's symptoms included fever and a distinctive rash on the face, back, nape, trunk, groin, as well as palms and soles.
