Crammer's Success: January 2022 MTLE Topnotcher Shares Study Tips

The adage "work smarter, not harder" often clashes with the reality of many students and professionals who find themselves resorting to cramming. This practice, characterized by intense study sessions concentrated in a short period, can be a double-edged sword. While it might seem efficient for some, it often leads to stress, anxiety, and diminished learning outcomes.

The appeal of cramming lies in its perceived ability to quickly absorb information and meet deadlines. However, research consistently shows that spaced repetition and consistent study habits are more effective for long-term retention. Cramming, on the other hand, can lead to superficial understanding and difficulty in applying knowledge to real-world situations.

Despite its drawbacks, some individuals seem to thrive under pressure, employing cramming techniques to achieve remarkable results. A prime example is Kyle Magistrado, a topnotcher in the 2022 Medical Technologist Licensure Exam from University of Santo Tomas. Despite facing a tight deadline and limited preparation time, he managed to excel in the exam, demonstrating that cramming can sometimes work, albeit with significant risks.

Facing a tight deadline after a challenging semester, Kyle decided to take a leap of faith. With only three weeks to prepare for the Medical Technologist Licensure Exam (MTLE), he opted to keep his study plans private, fearing insufficient preparation. He allocated just one to two days for certain subjects, relying heavily on last-minute cramming.

Despite his self-doubt and anxiety, Kyle persevered, driven by the belief that cramming could somehow pull him through. He sought solace in prayer, accepting the possibility of failure but determined to give it his all.

Initially, Kyle had planned to take the MTLE before graduation but procrastinated. The looming deadline forced him to confront his fears and seize the moment. This "now or never" mentality fueled his final push towards the exam.

However, it's important to note that Kyle's success story is not a universal blueprint. His ability to cram effectively may be attributed to various factors, including strong foundational knowledge, effective time management skills, and perhaps a unique learning style. For most individuals, relying solely on cramming is not a sustainable or reliable approach to academic or professional success.

To maximize learning and minimize stress, it's advisable to adopt a balanced approach that combines consistent study habits with strategic cramming techniques. This involves creating a study schedule, breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, and actively engaging with the material through techniques like active recall and spaced repetition.

Ultimately, the effectiveness of cramming depends on individual factors, the complexity of the subject matter, and the specific learning goals. While it can be a tempting shortcut, it's generally best to prioritize consistent, long-term study habits to achieve lasting success.
