Filipina tennis star Alex Eala's impressive run at the Canberra International women's singles tournament came to an end Friday, falling to China's Sijia Wei in the semifinals.

Eala, the rising 17-year-old, battled hard but ultimately succumbed to the more experienced Wei in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.  Wei, ranked 134th in the world by the WTA, used her powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes to overpower Eala, who currently sits at 147th in the rankings.

Despite the loss, Eala's performance in Canberra marks a strong start to her 2025 season. Reaching the semifinals of a WTA125 tournament is a significant achievement, and it signifies her continued progress on the professional circuit. This was her first WTA125 semifinal appearance and main draw of the year.

Eala displayed resilience and determination throughout the tournament, showcasing her growing maturity and competitive spirit. Though she fell short of reaching the final, the experience gained in Canberra will undoubtedly prove valuable as she continues to develop her game.

With the Canberra International behind her, Eala now sets her sights on the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year. She will be competing in the qualifying rounds, which begin on January 6th.  Eala will be aiming to secure a spot in the main draw and make her mark on the biggest stage in tennis.

Filipino tennis fans will be eagerly following Eala's journey in Melbourne, hoping to see her continue her rise in the world rankings and achieve further success on the international circuit.
