Philippine basketball star Kai Sotto has suffered a major setback, tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during a game with his B.League team, the Koshigaya Alphas.

The injury, sustained in a match against the Mikawa Seahorses on January 5th, brings a premature end to Sotto's promising season and deals a blow to both his club and the Philippine national team.

Sotto, a towering 7-foot-3 center, had been a key player for the Alphas, averaging 14.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. His presence on the court was crucial for the struggling team, who currently hold an 8-20 record.  The injury occurred during a post-up attempt in the first quarter, forcing him to exit the game and leaving a significant void in the Alphas' lineup.

The impact of Sotto's absence extends beyond the B.League.  He will be sidelined for Gilas Pilipinas' entire 2025 campaign, including the FIBA Asia Cup in August.  Sotto was expected to play a crucial role for the national team, having demonstrated his potential with impressive performances in the Asia Cup Qualifiers, averaging 15.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.

This devastating news has sent shockwaves through the Philippine basketball community.  Fans and fellow athletes alike have expressed their support for Sotto, acknowledging his dedication and talent.  Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone has confirmed that Japeth Aguilar will step in to fill the void left by Sotto.

Despite the heartbreaking setback, Sotto remains positive.  In an Instagram post, he shared, "The worst way to start the year, might be the darkest day of my basketball career, when I was told I tore my ACL. Tough to let this one sink in. I appreciate all the love and support everyone has given me these past few days. I know God has a better plan for me and we just have to keep going."

Sotto's resilience and determination will undoubtedly be crucial in his recovery and return to the court.  While the road ahead will be challenging, his fans and the Philippine basketball community remain hopeful for his full recovery and future success.
