Bacolod, Philippines - Kanlaon Volcano is exhibiting signs of unrest, raising concerns about another potential eruption. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued an advisory on Saturday, highlighting increased ground swelling and changes in sulfur dioxide emissions.
Phivolcs has been closely monitoring the volcano since its last eruption on December 9, 2024, which sent a 3,000-meter ash plume into the sky and prompted the agency to raise the alert level to 3. Recent observations indicate a "pronounced inflation or swelling" on the eastern side of the volcano, particularly in the middle and upper portions. This swelling, detected through ground deformation monitoring, suggests a buildup of pressure beneath the surface.
Adding to the concern, the Upper Pantao Observation Station recorded a sudden and sharp increase in the tilt of the volcano's eastern side starting Friday evening. Phivolcs interprets this as a "sudden pressurization within the upper portions of the edifice," further pointing towards a possible eruption.
While sulfur dioxide emissions were close to average on Friday, a significant drop was recorded on Thursday. This pattern, combined with the ground deformation data, mirrors the conditions observed before the December 2024 eruption. Phivolcs warns that the current indicators suggest "the shallow magma conduit of the volcano is undergoing pressurization that may lead to an eruption broadly similar to the 9 December 2024 event."
Authorities are urging residents living near the volcano to remain vigilant and prepared for a possible eruption. The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
