The young sampaguita vendor seen in a recent viral video, wearing a school uniform and arguing with a security guard, is an 18-year-old student from Baesa, Quezon City working hard to support herself.
Mandaluyong City Police confirmed that the young woman, contrary to online speculation, is indeed a student at a private school pursuing a medical technology course. She is not involved with any criminal syndicate.
Police Col. Mary Grace Madayag revealed that the student turned to selling sampaguita after her family's house was demolished. “Let’s clarify that the child is really a student. In fact, she is a scholar of a private institution and an intelligent child. She is just striving to augment her needs for school because their house was recently demolished. This was also confirmed by the barangay,” Madayag said.
The viral video, which showed a heated exchange between the student and a security guard, prompted a motu proprio investigation by the Philippine National Police-Supervisory Office for Security and Investigation Agencies (PNP-SOSIA).
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has also stepped in to offer support. Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao stated that they will provide psychosocial aid to the student and will be visiting her and her family. The DSWD also plans to speak with the security guard involved in the incident.
Social media personality and entrepreneur Rosmar Tan was able to connect with the student, nicknamed "Jenny," via video call and offer financial assistance. Tan confirmed that Jenny is a first-year medical technology student and promised to help clear her name.
This incident has sparked a conversation about the challenges faced by many students who struggle to make ends meet while pursuing their education. It also highlights the importance of verifying information before jumping to conclusions and spreading potentially harmful rumors online.
