Magnitude 7.8 earthquake hits Ecuador, dozens died

About 28 people has been recorded died in a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that was centered near the coast of Ecuador in April 16,2016. The quake struck at 18:58 local time on Saturday(23:58GMT) near the Northern coast of Muisne.


Severe damage is reported in many areas, as of the posting at least 41 people died and infrastructure destroyed.

Ecuador has a history of large subduction zone related earthquakes. Magnitude 7 or greater earthquakes have occurred within 250km of this event since 1900. On May 14th, 1942, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred 43km south of this April 16th,2016 event. On January 31,1906 a magnitude 8.3 earthquake(reportedly as large as M8.8 in some source).
