Events in the South China Sea is in the hot spot as China's ratcheting up tensions in the Asia-Pacific region by land grabbing and artificially developing islands in the South China Sea.

On Monday, the G-7 (Group of seven leading economies: Canada,France,Germany,Italy,Japan,U.K and the U.S),meeting in Japan, issued a joint statement expressing concern over maritime territorial disputes in Asia. Though the statement did not mention China by name, the wording of the statement was clearly aimed at China's recent reclamation activities and placing of missiles in the area.

However, Xi pledged to defend China's interests in the South China Sea, and of course doing so will includes the militarization of its man made islands.

The US Defense Secretary Ash Carter together with the Philippine officials visited the United States Nimitz-class nuclear powered super carrier USS John Stennis in the South China Sea.
