Juan Miguel Zubiri promise to build bridges to connect Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island

Negros Occidental: Senator-elect Juan Miguel Zubiri yesterday promised to continue to champion the causes of the Negros Island Region in the Senate, and the push to build bridges that will connect Negros to Panay. On the press conference, Zubiri thanked the Negrenses for giving him the second largest number of votes in the NIR in the race for the Senate on May 9.

"I promise and continue to be NIR's voice in the Senate," Zubiri said.

He said he was in Negros to get inputs for legislation to boost development in the area.\

Zubiri also pledged to continue the push for the construction of the Negros-Guimaras-Iloilo bridge even if it may not be a priority of the Duterte administration.

"I will never stop fighting for that, every budget hearing you will hear me asking for that," he said.
He said the bridges could be built through a public-private partnership, pointing out that he has been approached by Koreans, Japanese and Chinese interested in building the bridges.

He said connecting Negros to Panay would definitely boost the economy of both islands. Later on, bridges could also be built connecting Negros to Cebu and Cebu to Bohol, He added.

There have been several studies concerning the PGN Bridge Project. The first study was performed by the Japan International Cooperration Agency (JICA)in 1999. JICA estimated the total cost of the 23.19 km megaproject to be approximately 53 billion pesos. Itconnects Panay to Guimaras via a 2.59 km bridge while Guimaras is linked to Negros by another 20.6 km bridge while Guimaras is linked to Negros by another 20.6km bridge.
