Ruling on PH arbitration case vs CHINA to be released on July 12

Manila,Philippines - It was confirmed that the decision for the arbitration case filed by the Philippines against China will be issue on July 12 by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) based in The Hague, Netherlands.


According to a press release issued by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, its verdict in the arbitration between the Philippines and China will be made public on Tuesday, July 12, 2016.

The case was first initiated in January 2013 by the Philippines, following a difficult stand-off with China over Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.

The arbitration proceedings were initiated under Annex VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the first treaty governing international maritime law. 

"The Tribunal will issue its Award on Tuesday, 12 July 2016, at approximately 11 am CEST, The Hague," the PCA said in a statement Wednesday evening, June 29.

"The award will first be issued via e-mail to the parties , along with an accompanying Press Release containing a summary of the Award. The Press release will be in English and French, with an unofficial Mandarin Chinese translation provided," the PCA added.

"The Parties will receive originally signed version of the Award. Hard copies of the Award will also be sent to the Embassies of States that were granted observer status for the hearing. There will be no in-person meeting or ceremony for the rendering of the Awards," the PCA said.

Beijing claimed almost all part of the South China Sea using the language of historic rights. The Philippines and China are but two of the six overall claimants in the South China Sea. Malaysia, Taiwan,Brunie,and Vietnam.
