Duterte abolishes Negros Island Region in new EO

Manila, Philippines - Malacanang on Wednesday issued an executive order (EO) 183, which abolished the Negros Island Region (NIR) that was created during the term of President Benigno Aquino III.

The EO No. 183 which was signed by Duterte on August 7 reverts Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental to Western Visayas and Central Visayas, respectively.

The EO noted that the establishment of regional offices of the departments and agencies in the NIR requires substantial appropriation to be fully operational, thus, competing with government priority programs and projects for funding. Further more the EO ordered regional councils and offices to return back to their previous units of deployment or to be reassigned to other offices. Government operations in the NIR, should be done within 60 days, EO added.

Sun Star Bacolod said that Negros Occidental officials said that they have been advised by the DILG to pull out their personnel from the NIR offices and revert to their respective provincial offices.

Negros Island is the fourth largest island in the country with a land area of 13,351 square kilometers. It is composed of 19 cities, 38 towns, and 1,219 barangays.
