Naomi Osaka upset Serena Williams in 2018 U.S. Open

It was a long awaited victory for Naomi Osaka who rose to international prominence last year after defeating U.S. Open defending champion Angelique Kerber and now defeating her idol Serena Williams on Saturday.

Williams was fined a total of $17,000 after she was issued three code violations, $4000 for coaching warning, $3000 for smashing her racket, and $10,000 for verbal abuse directed at umpire, according to BuzzFeed News.

In the emotional trophy ceremony, Osaka began to cry but Williams standing next to her show off a sisterly act as she gave her a comforting gesture by wrapping Osaka's arm around her despite defeat.

Osaka offered her own speech that surprised everyone, Osaka apologized to the fans for spoiling the moment for them, "I know that everyone was cheering for her. I'm sorry it had to end like this. I just want to say thank you for watching the match."

"It was always my dream to play Serena in the U.S Open finals. So I'm really glad that was able to do that, and I'm really grateful i was able to play with you," Osaka added.
