Sen. Binay proposed bill to exempt teachers from tax

Senator Nancy Binay is introducing a bill that seeks to exempt teachers from tax. Those who supervise the conduct of the midterm elections next year and in future electoral exercises should receive tax-free compensation, Binay said.

The Senate Bill No. 1941, Binay proposed to exclude from income tax compensation that teachers receive for services rendered during national or local elections.

"Teachers are often said to be heroes of every election season. They are often called on to be on the front lines, serving as members of the Board of Election Tellers(BET), tasked with operating the vote counting machine (VCM) and assisting voters on Elections Day. Unfortunately, the election season is prone to incidents of election-related violence and death," reported in Manila Bulletin

Current laws, the compensation of teachers during the elections season are taxable which is included in the computation of their gross income.

Binay's bill has been referred by the Senate Committees on Ways and Means and Electoral Reforms and People's Participation.
