13-year-old confirmed infected by HIV in Davao City

A 13-year-old was youngest person recorded to have acquire the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Davao City, according to Sunstar report.

No additional details had been revealed by the Davao City Aids Council (DCAC) due to confidentiality, but, based on the record, there are at least seven minors have been infected with HIV since January 1984.

Authorities were alarmed on the increase of numbers of HIV victims especially on that very young age. Davao City alone, there have been a total of 2,525 HIV reported cases of which 132 are females and 2,393 are males.

Oscar Obenza said that the higher number of HIV cases in males may be caused by the misconception that the infection came from gay men.There are probably more gay men who go to the clinic for HIV testing, thus the figure,"the president of Olympus Davao said in Sunstar.

DCA Secretariat, Pricilla Senoc, stated in a media forum that young people are now immensely exposed with the influence of social media and that as early as 13 years old, some are already having sex which has become an alarming trend among our youth.

Moreover, Cagayan De Oro had recorded 459 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases have been recorded from year 2000 to March 2018.
