Two new species of Bugs discovered in Mt. Kanlaon

There are two new additional species of bugs discovered in the mountain of Kanlaon in Negros Occidental that mountaineers have to watch. The new species of Cercopids discovered earlier at the foot of Mt. Kanlaon are the Poeciloterpa Conica and the Poeciloterpa Mangkas.

Cercopids are big family of the tiny hemipterans, an insect group which has wings with a strong membranous part said Dr. Sheryl A. Yap as quoted in UPLB website. One thing notable about these insects is that they produce a spit-like substance, which called them 'spittlebugs'.

Mt. Kanlaon is one of the active stratovolcanoes in the Philippines. The researcher is identified as Elorde Crispolon Jr., who discovered the species at the foot of the volcano.

Recently, there are also species that have been discovered in Mt. Apo and Mt. Kitanlad, Bukidnon, the P. Altissima and the P. Gapudi. The bugs were named after the renowned Filipino entomologist and taxonomist, Dr. Victor P. Gapud, a former director of UPLB Museum of National History (MNH).
