A 73-year-old woman in India is thought to have become the world's oldest mother after giving birth to twin girls. Erramatti Mangayamma, a farmer from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh has delivered the twins via caesarian section on Thursday.

"the surgery went well... the mother and the babies are all healthy with no complications," Dr Sanakayyala Umashankar, the director of Ahalya IVF, who performed the C-section, told CNN.
The couple have been married since 1962 but had never given the chance to conceive naturally. They approached Dr. Umashankar in 2018 and after preliminary tests were promising, the doctor agreed to give them one round of IVF treatment.

Mangayamma Yaramati and her husband, Sitarama Rajarao, 82, from Andhra Pradesh, said they always wanted of having a baby but were unable to conceive. They had been stigmatised in their community because they were childless, she told BBC.
“They would call me a childless lady,” she said, adding: “We tried many times and saw numerous doctors, so this is the happiest time of my life.”
