A zebra gives birth to baby 'Zonkey' after mating with a donkey

A zonkey was born, a zebra and donkey mixed with stripey legs but with a donkey's face was discovered in Chyulu Hills National Park in Kenya.

Caregivers from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust were amazed when they discovered an unusual animal with a combination of two distinct breed.

According to its Facebook post, "Working with wildlife, one learns to expect the unexpected. Even the most seemingly straightforward story can eventually reveal its true stripes and end up surprising us all."

A zonkey is an unusual hybrid between a zebra and donkey. Since zebra pregnancies last 12 months, the team was quick to connect the dots how it all happened. "During her time with the cattle herd last year, she had obviously become  acquainted with an amorous donkey," the report said.

"The zonkey combines the sturdy body of its donkey sire and the striped legs of its zebra mother, which makes for a striking creature. While it should otherwise lead a normal life, zonkeys are mules, meaning that it will be unable to successfully breed once it reaches maturity," it added.

Their new home is in an area that isn’t plagued by heavy predation and thanks to the lush conditions, water and grass plentiful it is a good place to call home.
