Shinzo Abe, Japan's Prime Minister Resigns For Health Reasons

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced his resignation Friday, August 28, for health reasons.  The 65-year-old Abe has suffered from intestinal disease, but he said his condition had worsened recently.

He said that he was able to control the illness, ulcerative colitis, for nearly eight years during his term but it started to deteriorate earlier this month.

"As I am no longer in a condition to respond confidently to the mandate of the people, I have decided I should not stay in the prime minister's post," he said in a press conference.

"I made a judgment that I should not continue my job as prime minister" said Abe. "I need to fight the disease and need to be treated."

Abe was reelected in 2012, Japan's longest serving prime minister following his previous resignation in 2007.

He wasn't named an acting prime minister and will continue to serve until the next leader is chosen.
