Philippines to receive 1M CoronaVac vaccine procured from China

The first batch of coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines that the Philippine government has procured will arrive by Monday, March 29, according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.

The 1 million doses of CoronaVac vaccines produced by Chinese company Sinovac Biotech will arrive at the Villamor Airbase in Pasay City tomorrow amid the rapid surge of COVID-19 infections in the country.

President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to welcome the arrival of the vaccine. The event will take place on the first day of implementation of ECQ in Metro Manila wherein public gatherings will be prohibited.

“Sasalubong po rin siya sa Sinovac, at humingi na po kami ng exemption sa National Task Force kasi nga po doon sa rule na bawal ang mass gathering (He will greet Sinovac and we already asked the NTF to exempt the event from the rule on mass gathering),” he said.

“Nag-apply na po ako personally for exemption (I personally applied for the exemption). So we are processing the papers for the exemption para doon sa pagsalubong sa (for the welcoming of the) 1 million Sinovac on Monday,” he added.

More vaccine deliveries is expected in the next few months after completing contract requirements with Sinovac, Novavax, Moderna, and AstraZeneca. The government is also eyeing 15 million doses of Sputnik V vaccines and 25 million doses from Pfizer. Meanwhile, the government is finalizing contracts with Johnson & Johnson for five million doses.
