Hidilyn Diaz finally made history as she won a gold medal in the women's 55 kilograms weightlifting competition at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday, July 26.

The 30-year-old from Zamboanga City became the first Filipino athlete to win double Olympic medals after her 2016 Rio Olympics silver medal.

She won a total score of 224kg, with 97 and 127 in the snatched and clean & jerk respectively, beating China's world record holder Liao Qiuyun.

Diaz also put her name to the spotlight during the 2018 Asian Games as the first Filipino weightlifter to win gold. She also won bronze in the 2019 World Championships and first in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games held in the Philippines.
