Aklan prepares its burial grounds for COVID-19 fatalities as cases surge

The province of Aklan has recently logged almost 600 cases of new COVID patients in a single day, the highest among the provinces in Western Visayas.

Aklan provincial government notified mayors of the 17 towns to prepare burial grounds in their respective municipalities as the lone crematory in the province had stopped receiving cadavers.

In a letter dated August 2, 2021, Governor Florencio Miraflores said Gegato Abecia Funeral Parlor and Crematorium in Iloilo City has temporarily stopped accepting dead bodies due to the "huge volume of cadaver they receive daily."

The Department of Health in Western Visayas reported 166 COVID-19 related deaths were recorded from July 20 to August 2. The active COVID cases in the region reached 10,641 as of August 2.

Aklan has now placed under the modified enhanced community quarantine from August 1 to 15.

Meres Masangya, a nurse of Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital in Kalibo, Aklan shared photos on social media of patients who tested positive for COVID, waiting for available rooms at the hospital on August 1, 2021.
