PARALYZED MAN IN CAMIGUIN CONTINUES TO WORK WHILE LYING IN BED TO MAKE A LIVING FOR 30 YEARS BY EXTRACTING COPRA

 A man in Camiguin who could no longer move the lower part of his body is proving everyone that despite his terrible condition he can work to earn a living. And he do this for 30-years now while lying in bed.




Jerome Nacaitona's life story has inspired others when he was featured on GMA's Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.

According to Jerome it was month before his birthday when he got into a car accident, causing his body paralyzed.  He lost his ability to stand, at first, he could managed himself to sat down on a wheelchair until he suffered back pain.  




"Yung likod ko parang nadurog-durog. Agad inoperahan ako para lang daw makaupo kasi 'pag wala daw 'yun handi daw makaupo," he said.



Since he was under the care of his siblings, he revealed that there was a time that his father have been blaming him why they were still poor.

"May sarili silang pangarap hindi nila maabot kasi nagbabantay. 'Yung tatay ko ganun din. Sinisisi ka. Hindi raw mahirap kung hindi dahil sa akin," Jerome said.




Despite his condition, he decided to move out and live on his own. With the helped of his neighbors he was able to sell copra for a living. He used to work lying sideways in bed. Kids would sell him dried coconuts for P6 and he would extract it into copra to sell it for P41 per kilo.




Jerome had survived the very difficult challenged for 30 years. His nephew Jovy helped him smoke and dry the kernels to turn it into copra.

Added that he used to work to pay off his monthly loan for his daily needs, a scheme of barrowing money in advance and pay it after a month. 




"Pambayad sa loan. Php5,700 isang buwan. Matatapos na sunod na Martes. Loan na naman uli. kasi walang laman," he explained.



Through the KMJS he was able to visit the doctor to check for the first his condition and it turned out it was a complete spinal cord injury. Jerome received a wheelchair, folding bed, groceries and financial assistance. The Department of Social Welfare and Development also registered Jerome under its persons with disability (PWD) list so that he will able to benefit government's assistance.
