SAN MIGUEL EYES PHP18.5B 300MW LNG POWER PLANT IN SAN CARLOS, NEG. OCC.

The San Miguel Corp. Global Power Holdings is eyeing the construction of P18.5-billion 300-megawatt liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant in San Carlos City.

Based on the submitted documents to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), SMC Global Power Unit Reliance Energy Development, Inc. (REDI) will built and run the four 75MW generators which will be located within San Carlos Ecozone by the Tanon Strait, which separates Negros from Cebu.

The proposed project will be constructed inside the 49-hectare leased property from Grand Planters international Inc.

"The proposed power plant of REDI will help augment the demand for reliable and affordable power supply. The proposed power plant will not only supply enough electricity to Filipino households and businesses but will also contribute to national development. The proposed project will also support DOE's advocacy to shift to cleaner source of energy to reduce the GHG emissions from the energy sector," the statement read.

Meanwhile, Bacolod mayoral aspirant and Negros Occidental Provincial Consultant Alfredo "Albee" Benitez said, once the project will be established this could provide sufficient power in Negros Occidental which will be completely renewable.

Benitez added that REDI is targeting to start constructing the power project in the third quarter with completion eyed in the third quarter of 2024.
