MAGAT DAM TO RELEASE WATER ON SUNDAY AMID CONTINUOUS RAINS BROUGHT BY THE LOW-PRESSURE AREA (LPA) AND THE SOUTHWEST MONSOON IN LUZON

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) on Saturday, said it would be releasing water from Magat Dam in Isabela on Sunday, August 7, amid continuous rains brought by the low-pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon.

An advisory from NIA added that the NIA-Magat River, NIA-Mariis, PAG-ASA, concerned local government units and the Disaster Risk Management offices will discharge at least 200 cubic meters per second of water from the dam starting at 2 p.m.

"Due to the LPA/southwest monsoon in the area, the water level of the Magat Dam Reservoir is rising. To retain a safe water level in the reservoir, the NIA-Mariis will release 200 cubic meters of water. The amount of water may increase depending on the monitored rainfall at the Magat Watershed," NIA said.

NIA also urged the public to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety as avoiding fishing and other activities near the river.

Based on the monitoring of Pagasa, as of 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, the water level of Magat Dam was measured at 188.39 meters or 1.161 meters below the normal high water level of 190 meters.

PAGASA said the LPA and the southwest monsoon continue to bring rains in many parts of the country.

Authorities have yet to determine when the dam will be releasing water, as it will depend on the weather situation in the area.

From the Magat Dam, the water will be taken to mini-hydropower plants before being released to irrigation canals and the Magat River.

The Magat River flows through the towns of Ramon, San Mateo, Aurora, Cabatuan, Luna, Burgos, Reina Mercedes, Naguilian, and Gamu, Isabela.
