Alas Pilipinas Crushes Iran, Secures Semifinal Berth in AVC Challenge Cup

The Philippine women's volleyball team, Alas Pilipinas, continued their dominant run in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup, crushing Iran in straight (25-16, 25-13, 25-15) on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

This victory not only extends their undefeated record to 3-0 in the group stage but also secures their spot in the semifinals, a historic first for any Philippine volleyball team in the AVC completion.

Despite facing a taller Iranian squad, the Nationals dictated the pace of the game with impressive defense and relentless offense. De La Salle's Angel Canino led the scoring with 16 points, while Sisi Rondina chipped in 12 points, all coming from attacks.

This win surpasses the Philippines' previous best finish (7th place in 2023) and marks a significant milestone for the Philippine volleyball.

While acknowledging the challenge of a determined Chinese Taipei team (currently 0-3), De Guzman remains optimistic. "Chinese Taipei is excellent defensively," she said. "We have a slight height advantages, but we'll see how the team reacts tomorrow."

The national team celebrate a morale-boosting victory. They dominated the match in just 74 minutes, showcasing their offensive prowess with 47 kills compared to Iran's 29. They also effectively shut down Iran's key player, Aytak Salamat, limiting her to just 10 points.

The Philippines gears up for the next match against Chinese Taipei on Sunday, May 26.
