Starting September 10, Boracay Island will unveil a private beach cove exclusively for Muslim women, further cementing its reputation as an inclusive travel destination. The secluded beach will be located within one of the island's mixed-use leisure and resort developments, which also houses a hotel with a Halal kitchen certification.
Tourism Undersecretary for Muslim Affairs Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar stated that the initiative was suggested by foreign diplomats based in the Philippines, including Malaysian and Brunei ambassadors.
"Some Muslims may feel comfortable swimming in public, but others prefer a private area," she explained. "I'm sure those who currently swim in public would also appreciate this option, as they currently have no choice."
Valderrosa-Abubakar added that the idea was also discussed with Boracay's mayor during a previous visit by foreign dignitaries. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had previously mentioned the importance of promoting halal tourism and Islamic traditions in his State of the Nation Address.
The National Tourism Development Plan for 2023-2028 prioritizes making the Philippines more Muslim-friendly, and this new beach cove is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
