Chris Newsome showcased his Gilas Pilipinas-caliber skills as Meralco outlasted Macau Black Bears in the opening game of the 2024 East Asia Super League (EASL).
Newsome's stellar performance, highlighted by 18 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals, earned praise from Macau coach Garrett Kelly. Kelly admitted that Newsome was a primary focus of their scouting.
"He's a deadly shooter," Kelly said. "You have to be at arm's length because he's very sturdy and holds you off."
Newsome's efficient shooting, including 4 three-pointers, proved too much for Macau. Despite Kelly's preparations, Newsome consistently found ways to score.
Newsome, however, downplayed his individual achievements, emphasizing his team's victory. "I'm not really a scorer in the sense that I have to put up 20 points per game," he said. "All that matters is getting the win."
