Negros Power to Commence Underground Cabling in Bacolod

Bacolod City to Experience Improved Power Infrastructure with Underground Cabling.

Negros Power, in collaboration with Bacolod City Mayor Albee Benitez, is poised to embark on a significant infrastructure upgrade by relocating the city’s electrical and telecommunication cables underground.

This initiative, aimed at transforming Bacolod into a world-class city, will involve the underground placement of all cables along Lacson Street, including those belonging to Negros Power and various telecommunication providers.

To minimize disruption to traffic and pedestrian safety, the project will employ Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technology, enabling the installation of conduits with minimal surface disturbance. By burying the unsightly overhead cables, often referred to as “spaghetti wires,” the city aims to enhance its visual appeal.

The underground cables will be specifically designed to withstand the rigors of subterranean conditions, offering superior heat resistance and waterproofing properties compared to their above-ground counterparts. While this approach may incur additional costs, the long-term benefits, including increased efficiency and reduced maintenance requirements, are expected to outweigh the initial investment.

To streamline the process and maximize cost-effectiveness, the project will involve coordinating with multiple telecommunication companies to share the underground infrastructure. This collaborative effort will help minimize individual expenses and expedite the overall implementation.

Before the project can commence, the city government will need to pass a city ordinance to establish the legal framework and secure necessary approvals from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).
