Nine Filipinos named in the creation of PH satellite DIWATA-1

The Philippines has successfully launched the state of the art 50-kilogram imaging micro-satellite assembled by nine Filipino scientist, 7 of which are came from UP. The said imaging satellite is set to be brought to the International Space Station(ISS) via orbital ATK Commercial Resupply Services Flight 6(OA-6) Cygnus spacecraft from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA.

Diwata-1 will be housed in the ISS by the KIBO Japanese Experiment Module(JEM), which will release the micro-satellite into space through its Japan Small Satellite (JSS) deployer.

Once launched, the satellite is expected to traverse a Low earth Orbit 400 to 420 kilometers from the ground - taking images of the Philippines during its projected two daytime passes.

The nine young Filipino engineers and scientists from DOST and UP Diliman that designed and built DIWATA-1 are expected to build another microsatellite, DIWATA-2 which they say much better.

The Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development of DOST will fund and allot an area for the space research laboratory in UP Diliman.

Seven of the nine young Filipinos that built DIWATA-1 are from UP Diliman. They are Ariston Gonzales, Julian Marvick Oliveros, Juan Paolo Espiritu,John Leur Labrador, Delburg Mitchao,Menjamin Jonah Magallon and Kaye Kristin Vergel.

Gerwin Guba and Harold Bryan Paler are senior science research specialists of the DOST's Advanced Science and Technology Institute.

Vergel, 26 the only girl among the nine took Applied Physics in UP Diliman, Mitchao, 22 Mechanical Engineer, Magallon, 25, geodetic engineer and they are from Hokkaido University(HU) team.

For Tohoku University(TU) team, Gonzales, 26 UP electronics and communication engineering, UP Diliman, Oliveros, 23, UP ECE, Espiritu, 23 UP ECE with 3D printing tech startup, Labrador 23, UP ECE, Guba 34 DOST-ASTI supervising science specialist and Paler, 35, DOST-ASTI Solutions and Services Engineering Division senior science research specialist, ECE graduate from Ateneo de Davao University.
