Venezuela President declares 60 days state of emergency fears US plots

Venezuela: President Nicolas Maduro declared a 60 day state of emergency on Friday due to what he called plots from within the OPEC country in collusion with the US.

"Washington is activating measures at the request of Venezuela's fascist right, who are emboldened by the coup in Brazil," Maduro said in a state television broadcast on Friday.

Maduro did not provide details of the measure. Last year state of emergency was implemented in a states near the Colombia border. Maduro said he fears possible intervention by foreign armies and explained that the new emergency decree includes the ability to face these external threats.

An economic state of emergency has been in force in the oil-rich country since January, including rationing of food and other goods. The country is facing economic ruin largely because of the crash in oil prices. To reverse the downturn, Maduro said he had issued some 21 decrees within the framework of the Constitution, since the measure were introduced "to protect the people and socio-economic stability of the country."

Report in Reuter said, Venezuela's opposition is seeking to recall the unpopular leader, 53, amid a worsening crisis that includes food and medicine shortages, frequent power cuts, sporadic looting and galloping inflation.

But the former union leader and bus driver has vowed to stick out his term, and accuses the US of fomenting an undercover coup against him. He pointed to his week's impeachment of fellow leftist Dilma Rousseff in Brazil as a sign that he is next.
