Senator-elect Francis Tolentino announced the additional star to the Philippine flag to symbolize Benham Rise, an island group located at the northeastern border off the coast of Aurora province. He told during the 121st celebration of Philippine Independence Day at the Rizal Park in Davao City.
"I propose a fourth star to reflect the Benham Rise, the future Philippines, the future land for the next generation of Filipinos."
Under the UN Convention on the Law (UNCLOS) in 2012, former Environment Secretary Ramon Paje confirmed that the United Nations (UN) has approved the country's territorial claim to Benham Rise.
