Global barter trade communities issues joint statement over DTI's pronouncement

The online barter community has been growing fast all over the globe, showing another side of the Filipino's 'bayanihan' spirit during the pandemic without spending cash.

In just a matter of posting online of goods and services, members would be able to get beneficial items in exchange. Others just wanted to help people in need without expecting for something in return.

However, on June 14 the community was shocked with sadness with regard to DTI's pronouncement that Online Barter Trade is illegal

In a joint statement of All Barter Communities posted on Bacolod Barter Community Facebook group it says that, "there is no clear and specific legal basis for online barter platforms to be declared as unlawfal or illegal".

According to the group barter is recognized under the Civil Code of the Philippines since 1950. Online barter communities are not engaged in business, selling or promoting business and activities that are aimed to evade tax laws.

"Our collective definition of barter is exchanging goods and services based on the mutual and voluntary decision of two persons. It is not selling, for the goods or services are not exchanged based on cash or price but value," the statement read.

"We are united by a vision – to see a world where kindness is without borders and humanity is defined by the extent with which every race can help one another to survive the global impact of the pandemic and adapt to the new normal," it added.

The community has over 150 sub-groups which has implemented the same rules for its members online, saying that the group 'doesn't promote, endorse nor encourage any act that is against laws, morals, public order and public policy'.

Bacolod Barter Community has over 230,000 members since it was launched in May this year. Several people in need has so far blessed by kind-hearted act of Bacolaños. The group has a lot of story to tell especially to people who was very down in life during this health crisis.
