Miu Goto's gold medal gets replace after mayor bit it

 A Japanese softball player gold medalist Miu Goto will get a new gold medal after a mayor of her hometown controversially decided to bite the original without permission. The action of the mayor took social media attention, causing outrage online.




The picture that emerged online shows Mayor Takashi Kawamura removing his mask and biting into the medal during a victory event last week. People are criticizing the mayor for being disrespectful amid a coronavirus concerns.





"With support from the International Olympic Committee and in line with her own intention, Ms Goto's medal is now set to be exchanged for a new one," Tokyo organizers said as quoted on Reuters report. 





The mayor have apologized during a news conference and offered to pay a replacement from his own money.




Japanese silver medallist fencer Yuki Ota wrote on Twitter said: "Apart from showing a lack of respect for athletes, he bit it even though [athletes] are putting on medals themselves or on their team-mates during medal ceremonies as part of infection prevention measures. Sorry, I can't understand it."
