Lopez Jaena town Mayor Michael Gutierrez and congressional aspirant Jason Almonte were wounded when an unidentified gunman fired a shot at Christmas Party of the Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-LABAN) political party in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental on Wednesday night.
According to a police report, a gunshot at 8:45 p.m. was heard that hit the glass door and a splinter hit the nape of Almonte, who is running as 1st district representative of Misamis Occidental," PRO 10 said in a report.
The slug hit the left temple and exited the nape of Michael Gutierrez, who is running for vice governor of the province.
The two were immediately rushed to Misamis University Medical Center in Ozamiz City where they were given first aid. Gutierrez was later transferred to Mayor Hilarion A. Ramiro Sr. Medical Center where he was successfully operated on and now recovering in the intensive care unit.
In a Facebook post of Gutierrez' family, they said the mayor is in critical condition and suffered severe brain injury from the gunshot.
