FIRST HUMAN CASE OF H3N8 BIRD FLU WAS REPORTED IN CHINA

China has reported the first human case of H3N8 bird flu infection, but said to be very low risk of spreading it among humans.

According to China's National Health Commission on Tuesday, the variant was found in a four-year-old boy from the central province of Henan who showed fever and other symptoms on April 5.

The report says, the child has been in contact with chickens and cows raised at his home, it added in a statement.

H3N8 has started circulating since 2002 after it first emerged in North American waterfowl. It is known to be transmissible only to animals, common to horses, dogs and even found in seals.

In a tests made of the boy's close family contacts found "no abnormalities".

The agency said the boy's case was a "one-off cross-species transmission, and the risk of large-scale transmission is low."

H3N8 was said to be the caused of deaths of more than 160 seals off the northeastern coast of the United States in 2012.
