The National Basketball Association's (NBA) global games are designed to not only showcase pre-season matchups but also to cultivate a worldwide connection among young people through the sport of basketball. According to league officials, these events offer a unique opportunity for players and fans to engage in community activities, experience diverse cultures, and inspire the next generation of basketball enthusiasts.
Beyond the two-day pre-season games, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the importance of these events in fostering global connections. "The league has become much more global," Silver said in a media roundtable. "With nearly a third of our players hailing from outside the United States, it's clear that basketball is a truly international sport. These experiences are invaluable for both our players and fans."
The 2024 NBA Abu Dhabi Games, held from October 4-6 at Etihad Arena, featured a match between the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets. This event showcased the league's commitment to expanding its reach and engaging with fans in new markets.
Deputy Commissioner and CEO Mark Tatum echoed Silver's sentiments, highlighting the global games' role in inspiring youth to participate in basketball. "Our Jr. NBA Leagues in the UAE are seeing a 60% increase in participation this season, with 120 leagues now operating in the country," Tatum said. "This growth is a testament to the increasing popularity of basketball among young people."
Tatum also noted a surge in interest in basketball across Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan. "We have several Japanese players in the NBA, including Rui Hachimura and Yuto Watanabe, and now a Japanese G League player as well," Tatum said. "This demonstrates the tremendous growth and potential for basketball in the region."
By focusing on growing the game in every part of the world, the NBA is not only expanding its fan base but also fostering a sense of global unity through the sport of basketball.
