Negros Occidental now the country's green and organic island

Negros Occidental has now the biggest solar power facilities in the country, making it the Philippines solar power capital. The province of Negros has now a total solar generation capacity of 341.5 megawatts, based on the data provided by the Negros Occidental Investment Promotions  Center-Public Information Section.

The latest project worth Php4.9 billion solar power facility of San Carlos Sun Power Inc. (SaCaSun), a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corp., situated in a 75-hectare property inside the San Carlos Ecozone.

Other are Helios Solar Energy's 132.5 MW farm in Cadiz City, the biggest in Southeast Asia; Citicor Power's 25 MW plant in Silay City, Negros Island Solar Power's 48MW and 32 MW farm in Manapla town and La Carlota City, respectively and the other in San Carlos Solar Energy's 45 MW facility.

Negros Occidental Alfredo Maranon Jr. said the province still has other renewable energy sources aside from solar.

He said he has discussed with President Benigno Aquino III the plan to transform the province into a green economy.

"After a due diligence, we realized that on top of vast lands, the province is blessed with seven major river systems which have as estimated capacity of 200 MW," he said.

These major rivers include Himogaan,Sicaba,Malugo,Bago,Binalbagan,and Ilog-Hilabangan situated across Negros Occidental.

"these water system are ready to be tapped for renewable energy generation,' Maranon added.


Aside from the renewable energy that the province have also, Negros Occidental governor reiterated the ban on genetically modified organisms(GMOs) in the province amid the ongoing campaign to commercialize "Golden Rice" in the Philippines. "GMO is banned from Negros.Were an organic island," Maranon said.
