Cebuana Lhuillier suffered nationwide data breach

The Philippines remittance services Cebuana Lhuillier earlier reported a nationwide data breach, which put all its customers personal data at risk. The incident happened days after a report of major data breach at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), raising concerns about identity theft and personal data might be used to manipulate the automated 2019 elections.


Following to the incident Cebuana sent a notice to all its clients via email, informing them of the data breach.

The stolen data's include the customers' personal information like name, birth date, email address, mobile number and income information.

"We are writing to inform you of a security incident which may have affected your personal date stored in one of our email marketing tool services," the company told its customers. 

The comapany said it detected on January 15 attempts to use one of its email server as a relay to send out spam to other domains, Manila Bulletin reported.

The company discovers unauthorized downloads that took place last August 2018, Cebuana Lhuiller said. The company immdiately disconnected from the network after confirming the breach.

Cebuana Lhuillier is operating 2,500 branches nationwide. It operates financial services such as remittances, pawning, microinsurance and micro loan solution to businesses.
