China introduces anal swab tests for better COVID-19 detection

China started using anal swab tests for better detection of COVID-19. According to a report from state-run channel CCTV the tests are now being done for some high-risk individuals in the country.

While the new type of coronavirus test surprise some individuals, authorities are claiming that this method is actually far more accurate compared to nose or throat test.

Infectious Disease Specialist Li Tongzeng explained that anal swab can "increase rate of infected people" since virus lasts longer in the anus.

The test involves inserting a cotton-tipped swab about 1-2 inches into the rectum.

"In some asymptomatic cases or in individuals with mild symptoms, they tend to recover from the illness very quickly. It's possible that there will be no trace of the virus in their throat after three to five days," Li said.

"Anal swabs aren't as convenient as throat swabs, so they're only being used on individuals in key quarantine areas," he said. "This will reduce the return of false positive," he added.
