WARNING: CHEMICAL SPILL IN THE DAVAO RIVER

Residents near Davao River warned not to fish due to the chemical spill.

The City Risk Reduction and Management Office, DENR, BFAR, and other concerned agencies continue to respond to the chemical spill that happened in the Suawan River this morning.

It has been confirmed by the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office that there has been a chemical spill in the Davao River. The residents were warned to avoid fishing because it is dangerous to their health.

The statement to the agency is related to the recent tanker truck accident on the Suawan River, where it loaded caustic soda chemicals.

According to Baloran, the chemical leaked from the truck towards Suawan Creek is a continuation of the Tamugan River- one of the tributaries of the Davao River.

The driver, Paciano Doydora Jr, 39, died on the spot, while the helper, Jerwin Guindanam, was injured.

Based on the report, the truck driver lost control while traveling along the highway in Sitio Lanitum, Brgy Suawan, Marilog District, Davao City.

Aside from fishing, residents were advised to avoid bathing in streams, especially those along the Suawan River.

In the meantime, the DENR personnel went to the area to take water samples, especially since the last follow-up revealed that there were already dead fish in the creek covered by the aforementioned area where the accident occurred.

Caustic soda or sodium hydroxide is said to be a dangerous chemical. It burns the skin if ingested. It also causes vomiting and diarrhea. It is a chemical mixed in making soap and used to prevent blockages. -BNFM-DAVAO
