The Philippine sports community is mourning the tragic loss of Mervin Guarte, a decorated athlete and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, who was fatally stabbed in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
 



Guarte, 32, was reportedly asleep at the home of a barangay councilor when an unidentified assailant entered the house and stabbed him in the chest. Despite managing to call for help and being rushed to the hospital, Guarte succumbed to his injuries.  

A member of the Philippine Air Force and assigned in Lipa, Batangas, Guarte was a celebrated athlete who brought pride to the country through his achievements in obstacle course racing. He secured a gold medal in the men's 5km obstacle course race at the 2019 SEA Games and another gold in the men's team relay event at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.  He also held two silver medals from the 2011 SEA Games in the 800m and 1500m track events.  



The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched an investigation into the incident and is currently pursuing a person of interest.  

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) expressed their condolences and deep sadness over Guarte's untimely death.  The Pilipinas Obstacle Sports Federation also condemned the incident and called for justice to be served.  

Guarte's passing is a significant loss to the Philippine sports community. He will be remembered not only for his athletic prowess but also for his dedication and sportsmanship.
