Comelec chairman Andres Bautista resigns

Manila, Philippines - " It is with my deep sadness that I am informing you about my decision to resign as the chair of the Commission on Elections by the end of the year," Baustista said in an open letter on his social media account, address to his Comelec family.
“After much prayer and discernment, I believe that this is the right time to step down given the postponement of the Barangay and SK elections.”

He added that he already filed a resignation letter in Malacanang on Wednesday, effective until by December 31, 2017.

"After much prayer and discernment, I believe that this is the right time to step down given the postponement of the barangay and SK elections. This was not an easy decision. But my family, especially my children, need me now more than ever," Bautista said.

By the time he steps down on December 31, 2017, Bautista would have spent two years and 8 months as Comelec chair.

Bautista's term was supposed to expire on February 2, 2022. This means Bautista is cutting his term by at least 4 years.
