Loy Krathong is known to be a festival of lights. The word Loy- means to float and krathong- refers to a piece of banana trunk decorated with flowers, banana leaves, candles and incense sticks. Therefore, loy krathong means floating banana festival.
You might be wondering why do Thai people celebrate this kind of festival?
Loy Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in traditional Thai lunar calendar. In Western calendar , it falls in November. The government will announce the exact date to celebrate this festival.
Thai people believe with so many stories about loy krathong and how it originated. When thai people let their krathong float in a water most especially river means they respect the goddess of the river called Pra Mae Khongkha. River for them is their own blood veins.
Thai people decided to worship and ask for forgiveness to the goddess of water. At this moment, Thai people wave goodbye to misfortune, wash away their sins and make wishes for the coming years.
